Art doesn't have to be NICE

This was originally written as an answer to a different post but I decided to post it separately because it’s too important for me to be lost in an angry dispute and the post was just a trigger.

I don’t think art has to show only the pretty and the right. As a creator I am often concerned that if my character say or do something racist or controversial it will automatically be considered my beliefs. It irks me when people think that showing the dark side of human nature is considered endorsing this part of nature. World is full of hatred, injustice, rape and murder and I think art not only has the right but the duty to also show the dark side. It’s not all dasies and ponies and romance and pretty rainbow friendships but also struggling with traumas and overcoming your fears and problems just to be able to have any real relationship.

Of course, everybody has the right to ignore the pieces containing elements that are painful or traumatic to them; at the same time they don’t have the right of guilt-tripping the creator or the readers/watchers for enjoying it.

BLACK MARCH
Thursday, March 1st 2012 to Saturday 31st March 2012

With the continuing campaigns for Internet-censoring litigation such as SOPA and PIPA, and the closure of sites such as Megaupload under allegations of ‘piracy’ and ‘conspiracy’ the time…

Actually DO buy. Finally buy the hard copy of your favorite webcomic. But that indie novel you saw self-published as e-book. Find interesting music online and buy it directly from the creators. Get yourself that interesting idie game. Take money away from the mainstream publishers and put it where it will promote independent creators and small idie players.

We feel so compelled to buy legal products where not a lot of profits goes to the actual creators; shift that money to independent media and support independent creators. Buy merch. Donate for additional updates. Take part in idiegogo & kickstarted campaigns. And promote all those. Show that those who put content online for easy accessibility are not naive, that people want to pay for things that are accessible and even when they can try it for free.
